Why shushing works — and why you run out
The shush imitates the loud, low hush a baby heard in the womb; it is a familiar sound arriving at a moment of distress. The problem is stamina. A parent shushing at 3 a.m. gets quieter and slower after a few minutes, right when consistency matters most. A dedicated shusher device solves that but is one more gadget to charge and carry.
The app’s shusher-style sounds are generated, not recorded, so the rhythm stays even and there is no loop seam. Start it with one tap from the lock screen and let it run, while your hands stay free for holding.
Rescue mode for the wake-ups that do not settle
When a wake-up escalates, tap Rescue on the Now Playing screen. The app switches to a stronger settle mix — brown hush plus heartbeat — and then eases it back down over ten minutes so your baby is not left with a loud sound once they have calmed. Rescue is one tap, designed to be found in the dark.
- Shusher-style sounds and womb audio for newborns
- Rescue mode: stronger settle mix that softens over ten minutes
- Heartbeat, brown noise and rain to layer underneath
- Soft two-second start; no sudden onsets
For colic evenings
Colicky stretches are long, and the sound needs to outlast them. Set the timer to 45, 60 or 90 minutes with a slow fade so the shush tapers as your baby settles rather than stopping abruptly. Afterwards, log the evening with one tap; the sleep log keeps the sound that was playing, so you can see which approach lined up with calmer nights.
BabySleep is a sound and tracking tool for parents, not a medical device. Nothing on this page is medical advice; if you are worried about your baby’s sleep or health, talk to a pediatric professional.
Frequently asked questions
Is a shusher app as good as a shusher device?
It does the same job — a steady rhythmic hush — on a device you already carry, and adds womb sounds, a heartbeat layer, a fade-out timer and a sleep log. Keep the phone off the crib and at a moderate volume, as you would with any sound source.
How loud should a shusher be?
The traditional advice is “about as loud as the crying” — but the app is hard-capped in the audio engine so it cannot exceed its ceiling, and we suggest a moderate level with the phone at least two metres from the crib. Not medical advice.
Is Rescue mode free?
Rescue mode is part of Premium, along with the full sound catalog, four-layer mixing, AI tools and unlimited stories.
